Mino da Fiesole: Renaissance Virgin and Child 15 century relief plaque

Our reproduction is based on a marble relief, Virgin and Child, by the Renaissance sculptor Mino da Fiesole (Italian [Florentine], 1429-1484). The original relief, now in the Museum's collection, depicts the Virgin holding the Christ Child, seated on a cushion, with her veil falling over his lap. The baby Christ holds in his left hand an orb surmounted by a cross while he raises his right hand in benediction-symbols associated with Christ. Both figures appear gracefully subdued, as if engaged in silent contemplation. The tender, protective gesture of the Virgin's right hand is especially poignant.
