HAND-CRAFTED AND HAND PAINTED BEAUTIFUL Replica from an original ancient
Greek Vase TYPE: HYDRIA Musem Replica Ketos of Troy Hydria.
This vase is a replica of one found at the Etruscan colony of Caere, and
is therefore known as a Caeretan black figure hydria. The original was
created between 530-520 b.c., and is kept in the Niarchos Collection, in
Athens, Greece. The main scene shows Hercules (Herakles) fighting the
sea monster (ketos) of Troy. The sea monster on the vase is shark-like,
with a spiney back and long tail. Around the ketos are other sea
creatures: a seal, dolphins, an octopus. The ketos was sent by Poseidon,
god of the sea, to terrorize the people of Troy. To be rid of the
beast, the king's daughter had to be sacrificed. So King Laomedon
chained his daughter Hesione to the cliff by the sea. Hercules rescued
her by killing the ketos with a fish hook, visible in his hand. The
reverse of the vase shows some hunting symbols: eagles chasing a hare.
The foot and shoulder design are done in typical, bright, Caeretan
style.
