Sculptor François Pompon (French, 1855-1933), who spent fifteen years as
a stone carver in the studio of Auguste Rodin, won critical success for
his plaster model of this polar bear. He subsequently made a number of
replicas of the sculpture in various sizes and media, one of which is in
the Museum's collection. Our reproduction is cast from a direct mold of
the original.
